Revolusi Damai

Revolusi Damai (bahasa Jerman: Friedliche Revolution) Juga disebut dengan istilah "titik balik" (bahasa Jerman: Die Wende) (pelafalan dalam bahasa Jerman: [diː ˈvɛndə]) adalah proses perubahan sosial politik yang menyebabkan berakhirnya Partai Persatuan Sosialis Jerman yang merupakan partai yang dominan di Republik Demokratik Jerman (RDJ atau Jerman Timur) dan transisi menuju demokrasi parlementer yang memungkinkan pernyatuan kembali Jerman Barat dan Jerman Timur. Revolusi ini menjadi titik balik yang sepenuhnya tercipta melalui inisiasi kebebasan terhadap kekerasan, protes, dan keberhasilan demonstrasi yang secara meyakinkan menyebabkan terjadinya pemilihan lokal pada bulan Mei 1989 dan pemilihan parlemen RDJ yang bebas pertama dilaksanakan pada Maret 1990.^[1]

Penyatuan Jerman Barat dan Jerman Timur

Panggilan terhadap penyatuan Jerman Barat dan Jerman Timur semakin terdengar keras selama revolusi damai. Pemilihan parlemen RDJ yang bebas pertama mempengaruhi penyatuan Jerman. Pemilu yang dilaksanakan tersebut dimenangkan oleh Aliansi untuk Jerman (bahasa Jerman: ‘Allianz für Deutschland’) yang menjanjikan penyatuan kembali Jerman Barat dan Jerman Timur dengan cepat. Adapun konsekuensi dan peluang dari demokrasi baru ini adalah perubahan keadaan ekonomi, mata uang, dan persatuan sosial.^[2]

Bersatunya Jerman Barat dan Jerman Timur menandakan berakhirnya era Perang Dingin antara Blok Barat yang dikomandoi oleh Amerika Serikat dan Blok Timur yang dikomandoi oleh Uni Soviet di Eropa Timur.
