Rem drum

Rem drum (juga disebut rem tromol) adalah rem bekerja atas dasar gesekan antara sepatu rem dengan drum yang ikut berputar dengan putaran roda kendaraan. Agar gesekan dapat memperlambat kendaraan dengan baik, sepatu rem dibuat dari bahan yang mempunyai koefisien gesek yang tinggi.

Rem drum mempunyai kelemahan kalau terendam air, tidak dapat berfungsi dengan baik karena koefisen gesek berkurang secara nyata/significant. Oleh karena itu mulai ditinggalkan dalam dunia otomotif dan mengantinya dengan rem cakram.

Prinsip kerja rem drum

Rem drum bekerja dengan prinsip gesekan, gesekan ini akan mengubah energi gerak pada rem drum menjadi energi panas sehingga perputaran roda terhenti dan temperatur sekitar rem meningkat. Konstruksi rem tromol memiliki dua buah kampas rem yang terletak dibagian dalam. Lalu dibagian luar kampas rem terdapat komponen berbentuk mangkuk yang kita kenal sebagai tromol rem. Arah gerakan rem tromol itu saling menjauhi, artinya saat rem ditekan maka dua buah kampas rem akan bergerak ke arah luar (saling menjauhi). Gerakan tersebut akan membuat kampas rem menekan permukaan dalam tromol rem. Sehingga terjadilah gesekan yang akan menghentikan putaran tromol dan roda.

Kelebihan dan kekurangan

Berikut ini adalah beberapa kelebihan dan kekurangan dari penggunaan rem drum atau rem tromol pada kendaraan.^[1]

Kelebihan

Rem drum dapat digunakan pada kendaraan yang membutuhkan kerja ekstra dalam pengereman, seperti bus, truk, dan lainnya.
Rem drum tidak mudah kemasukan debu dan kotoran karena lebih tertutup daripada rem cakram.
Kinerja pengereman lebih lembut dan penampang pengereman dapat dibuat lebih lebar untuk memaksimalkan pengereman.

Kekurangan

Tidak seluruh kampas rem menempel ke roda mengakibatkan daya pengereman hanya 70 persen saja.
Rem lebih cepat panas karena sistem rem yang tertutup dan jika terkena air rem menjadi tidak pakem,dan jika oli rem kotor membuat rem menjadi lebih berisik.
