Sebuah referendum kemerdekaan diadakan di Kaledonia Baru pada tanggal 4 November 2018.[1][2] Para pemilih diberi kesempatan untuk memutuskan apakah mereka ingin tetap menjadi wilayah Prancis atau memperoleh kemerdekaan. Hasilnya 56,4% mendukung status quo dan 43,6% menginginkan kemerdekaan. Tingkat partisipasinya mencapai 81% dari 174.995 orang yang layak memilih dalam referendum ini.[3] Penduduk yang baru pindah dan dapat ikut serta dalam pemilu tidak diperbolehkan memilih dalam referendum ini, sesuai dengan ketentuan Perjanjian Nouméa tahun 1998; jumlah mereka sendiri mencakup 17% dari 210.105 pemilih terdaftar di Kaledonia Baru.

Latar belakang

Kaledonia Baru secara resmi dikuasai oleh Prancis pada tahun 1853, dan kemudian orang-orang Eropa dan Polinesia berdatangan dan menjadikan suku Kanak yang merupakan penduduk asli sebagai minoritas (39% berdasarkan sensus tahun 2014).[4]
