Red and Blue Chair

The Red and Blue Chair (Kursi Merah Biru) adalah sebuah kursi yang didesain pada tahun 1917 oleh Gerrit Rietveld. Kursi ini merepresentasikan dari gaya De Stijl dalam bentuk tiga dimensi.

Sejarah

Asal muasal kursi ini adalah sebuah kursi kayu yang tidak berwarna. Kursi ini dibuat awal dekade 1920an.[1] Seorang anggota kelompok De Stijl yang juga seorang arsitek, Bart van der Leck, melihat bentuk asli model kursi ini dan menyarankan untuk menambahkan warna-warna cerah.[2] Dia lalu membuat model kursi baru dari kayu dan mewarnai sebagian besar dengan warna hitam dan beberapa bagian dengan warna-warna primer yang melambangkan gerakan De Stijl. Akibat yang ditimbulkan dengan kobinasi warna tersebut adalah kursi ini seolah tersamarkan dengan dinding dan lantai yang berwarna hitam di rumah Schröder dimana kursi ini ditempatkan.[3] Kombinasi warna tersebut juga mengakibatkan kesan seolah kursi ini sedang melayang karena strukturnya seolah berwarna transparan menyatu dengan warna tembok.[4]

Kursi ini sekarang disimpan di Museum Modern Art setelah Philip Johnson memberikannya sebagai hadiah untuk disimpan secara permanen, Pada tahun 1923, dilakukan pengecatan ulang pada kursi.[5] The chair also resides at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.[6]

Fakultas Arsitektur Universitas Teknologi Delft pernah meminjam kursi ini untuk pameran yang mereka selenggarakan. Pada tanggal 13 Mei 2008, terjadi kebakaran di kampus arsitektur Universitas Teknologi Delft yang menghancurkan sebagian bangunan. Untungnya Kursi Merah Biru berhasil diselamatkan oleh petugas pemadam .[7]

Tahun 2012, kursi ini disimpan di Institut Seni Minneapolis di Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Tahun 2013, Kursi ini dipindahkan ke Auckland, Selandia Baru.
