Ranau gading ( Dentatherina merceri ) adalah spesies ikan .

Ranau gading berasal dari Pasifik tengah-barat. Ia dijumpai dari Filipina hingga timur laut Australia dan dari Maluku hingga Kepulauan Trobriand . Ia dijumpai di dekat pantai di sekitar pulau dan di atas terumbu karang. Kecuali biologi larva, sedikit yang diketahui mengenai spesies ini.[1] Ini mungkin diambil sebagai makanan oleh beberapa spesies yang penting secara komersial.[1]

Dentatherina awalnya diklasifikasikan dalam Atherinidae . Pada tahun 1984, LR Parenti menganggapnya dan phalostethids lainnya sebagai taksa saudara . Namun, memeringkat kedua kelompok ini (Phallostethidae dan Dentatherinidae) sebagai dua famili dalam superfamili yang sama atau dua subfamili (Dentatherininae dan Phallostethinae) dalam Phallostethidae adalah keputusan subjektif. Kekhasan Dentatherina dapat digunakan untuk mendukung pengakuan keluarga yang terpisah.[2] Fish Base menganggap spesies ini milik keluarganya sendiri.
