Raijū

Raijū (雷獣) merupakan makhluk legendaris berwujud serigala atau anjing berwarna putih dan biru dalam cerita rakyat Jepang, dan terbentuk dari elemen petir. Makhluk ini merupakan pendamping Raijin, dewa petir Shinto.

Deskripsi

Menurut catatan sumber, Raijū memiliki bentuk tubuh lain yang menyerupai berbagai macam hewan, seperti tanuki, macan tutul, macan kumbang, atau macan kumbang putih, kambing-hutan rubah, musang, martes, harimau, kucing,

Orang Jepang dahulu yang percaya dengan takhayul, memiliki kebiasaan menutup pusarnya ketika mendengar guntur. Mereka percaya Raiju akan tidur di pusar manusia untuk bersembunyi dari dewa petir Raijin yang akan menembakkan panah petir ke makhluk tersebut.^[1]

kemunculan Raiju dikaitkan dengan fenomena misterius guntur dan kilat. Mitos yang menceritakan tentang Raiju diyakini bersumber dari teks materia medica Cina Bencao Gangmu, dan para peneliti berpendapat cerita tersebut menjadi tenar selama zaman Edo.^[2] Raiju diberi konotasi negatif karena muncul banyak peristiwa yang terjadi di langit, di luar nalar manusia pada era tersebut.^[2]

Pendekatan ilmiah

Teori terbaru menunjukkan bahwa Raiju pada dasarnya adalah hewan kecil yang tinggal di pohon yang disebut hakubishin (Paguma larvata) yang ditemukan di negara-negara Asia Timur seperti Tiongkok dan Taiwan. Sementara, beberapa ahli percaya bahwa Paguma larvata dibawa oleh tentara Perang Dunia II sebagai hewan peliharaan,^[2] kemiripan Raiju dalam lukisan dari periode Edo juga menunjukkan bahwa Paguma larvata (Musang bulan) telah ada di Jepang sejak jauh sebelumnya.
