Punggungan tengah samudra

Punggungan tengah samudra (bahasa Inggris: mid-ocean ridge) atau biasa disingkat MOR, adalah rangkaian gunung berapi bawah laut di mana kerak bumi baru terbentuk dari leleran magma dan aktivitas gunung berapi, dapat membentang hampir 60.000 km dan dengan lebih 90 persen pegunungan terletak di laut dalam yang terbentuk oleh lempeng tektonik. Sebagian besar berada di bawah air, dengan ketinggian rata-rata punggung 2.500 meter (8.200 kaki). MOR juga berasosiasi dengan daerah divergensi lempeng tektonik yang membentuk celah di dasar laut (rift). Kebalikan dari MOR adalah zona penunjaman lempeng.^[1]

Punggungan tengah samudra terjadi di sepanjang batas lempeng yang berbeda, di mana dasar samudra baru tercipta saat lempeng tektonik bumi menyebar terpisah. Saat lempeng terpisah, batuan cair naik ke dasar laut, menghasilkan letusan gunung berapi basal yang sangat besar. Pengangkatan dasar laut ini terjadi ketika arus konveksi naik ke mantel di bawah kerak samudra dan menghasilkan magma di mana dua lempeng tektonik bertemu di batas yang berbeda. Kecepatan penyebaran mempengaruhi bentuk punggung, tingkat penyebaran yang lebih lambat menghasilkan topografi yang curam dan tidak teratur sementara tingkat penyebaran yang lebih cepat menghasilkan profil yang jauh lebih luas dan lereng yang lebih landai.^[1]

Punggungan tengah samudra di dunia terhubung dan membentuk satu sistem punggungan tengah samudra global yang merupakan bagian dari setiap samudra, menjadikan sistem punggungan tengah pegunungan samudra terpanjang di dunia, dengan total panjang sekitar 60.000 km.^[2]

Jenis-jenis

Ada dua proses, dorongan punggung (ridge-push) dan tarikan lempeng (slab-pull) yang dianggap bertanggung jawab atas penyebaran yang terlihat di pegunungan tengah laut, dan ada beberapa ketidakpastian tentang mana yang dominan.^[2]

Dorongan punggung terjadi ketika berat punggungan mendorong sisa lempeng tektonik menjauh dari punggungan, sering kali menuju Zona Subduksi. Di zona subduksi, tarikan lempeng berlaku. Ini hanyalah berat lempeng tektonik yang disubduksi (ditarik) ke bawah lempeng di atasnya yang menyeret sisa lempeng di belakangnya.

Proses lain yang diusulkan untuk berkontribusi pada pembentukan kerak samudera baru di pegunungan tengah laut adalah "konveyor mantel". Namun, ada beberapa penelitian yang menunjukkan bahwa mantel atas (astenosfer) terlalu plastik (fleksibel) untuk menghasilkan gesekan yang cukup untuk menarik lempeng tektonik.
