Pulau Sebatik adalah sebuah daerah yang berada di perbatasan antara Negara Indonesia dan Negara Malaysia. Secara administratif, pulau ini dikuasai oleh 2 negara, Sebatik bagian utara di kuasai oleh Kerajaan Malaysia, dan Sebatik bagian selatan dikuasai Republik Indonesia. Pemisahan wilayah Sebatik Indonesia dengan Sebatik Malaysia menggunakan titik koordinat 4°10' sesuai dengan perjanjian Konvensi London 1891, dimana semua wilayah Sebatik yang dikuasai oleh Belanda diambil oleh Indonesia, dan semua wilayah Sebatik yang di kuasai oleh Inggris diambil oleh Malaysia. Wilayah Sebatik Indonesia masuk dalam wilayah Provinsi Kalimantan Utara, dan Wilayah Sebatik Malaysia masuk dalam Negara Bagian Sabah.
Mayoritas penduduk Pulau Sebatik bersuku Bugis. Dan orang pertama yang datang ke Pulau Sebatik adalah Ambo Emmang dari Suku Bugis. Ia berasal dari Kabupaten Wajo, Sulawesi Selatan.
Asal usul nama Sebatik berasal dari pemberian nama Tim Ekspedisi Belanda yang pada saat berkuasanya meneliti di Sebatik dan menemukan ular besar sejenis Sanca. Masyarakat yang mengikuti ekspedisi tersebut menyebut ular yang ditemukan dengan ular "Sawa Batik" dan pada saat itu Belanda menyebutnya "Sebettik" dan kemudian berangsur-angsur berubah penyebutan hingga menjadi "Sebatik".
Pada umumnya masyarakat Bugis yang melakukan aktivitas perdagangan (padangkang) baik ke Sulawesi, Malaysia, dan Filipina, lebih sering menyebut nama Sebatik dengan sebutan "Sebate"
Sebatik adalah salah satu tempat di mana terjadi pertempuran hebat antara pasukan Indonesia dan Malaysia saat terjadinya "Konfrontasi".
Pada tanggal 8 Maret 2005, Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono mengunjungi daerah wilayah perbatasan Republik Indonesia di Pulau Sebatik. Kunjungan presiden ini dalam penyelesaian kasus Blok Ambalat yang di klaim Malaysia sebagai wilayah Kerajaan Malaysia.
Pada tanggal 16 Desember 2014, Presiden Jokowi mengunjungi wilayah perbatasan Republik Indonesia di Pulau Sebatik. Di pulau terluar ini, Presiden mengunjungi beberapa lokasi seperti Patok 3 di Desa Aju Kuning dan Menara Patok Nol di Desa Pancang, di mana terdapat pos Angkatan Laut yang dapat melihat langsung wilayah Malaysia, yakni Tawau. Di tempat ini, selain meninjau fasilitas di pos perbatasan, Presiden Jokowi menaiki pesawat dan mendarat di pos perbatasan milik pasukan marinir TNI-AL di Seibajo, dan selanjutnya memanjat pos menara tertinggi Pos Perbatasan Pancang, di Pulau Sebatik, Kalimantan Utara (Kaltara).[1]

Pulau Sebatik merupakan daerah perbatasan Indonesia-Malaysia. Pulau Sebatik termasuk dalam wilayah administratif Kecamatan Sebatik, yaitu kecamatan paling timur di kabupaten Nunukan, Provinsi Kalimantan Utara. Kecamatan Sebatik terdiri dari empat desa, yaitu Tanjung Karang, Pancang, Sungai Nyamuk Tanjung Aru dan Setabu. Pulau ini secara umum beriklim panas dengan suhu udara rata-rata 27,8 °C, suhu terendah 22,9 °C pada bulan agustus dan tertinggi 33,0 °C pada bulan April. Pulau ini merupakan salah satu pulau terluar yang menjadi prioritas utama pembangunan karena perbatasan langsung dengan negara tetangga. Program utama yang perlu dilakukan di Pulau Sebatik antara lain adalah pembangunan sektor pertanian, perkebunan, perikanan dan pariwisata serta peningkatan hukum dan pengawasan keamanan.
Pulau Sebatik terdiri dari 5 Kecamatan dan 19 Desa yang kan siap menjadi DOB (Daerah Otonomi Baru). Kecamatan Sebatik terdiri dari Desa Padaidi, Desa Sungai Manurung, Desa Tanjung Karang dan Desa Balansiku, Kecamatan Sebatik Barat terdiri dari Desa Setabu, Desa Binalawan, Desa Liang Bunyu dan Desa Bambangan, Kecamatan Sebatik Tengah terdiri dari Desa Sungai Limau, Desa Maspul, Desa Bukit Harapan dan Desa Aji Kuning, Kecamatan Sebatik Utara terdiri dari Desa Seberang, Desa Lapri dan Desa Pancang, sedangkan Kecamatan Sebatik Timur terdiri dari Desa Tanjung Harapan, Desa Sungai Nyamuk, Desa Bukit Aru Indah dan Desa Tanjung Aru.
Pulau Sebatik terbagi dua. Belahan utara seluas 187,23 km²merupakan wilayah Negara Bagian Sabah, Malaysia, sedangkan belahan selatan dengan luas 246,61 km²masuk ke wilayah Indonesia di Kabupaten Nunukan, Provinsi Kalimantan Utara. Dari luas ini 375, 52 hektare di antaranya merupakan kawasan konservasi.
