Proses lupa

Proses lupa adalah suatu proses di mana seseorang akan kehilangan ingatan jangka pendek. Proses lupa dapat pula dikatakan sebagai hilangnya kemampuan untuk menyebutkan kembali ataupun memunculkan apapun yang sudah dipelajari. Secara sederhana, lupa merupakan hilangnya kemampuan untuk untuk mengungkapkan kembali informasi yang telah diterima. Hal ini mungkin disebabkan karena informasi tidak disimpan dengan baik.[1]

Fenomena lupa dapat terjadi pada siapapun juga baik anak-anak, remaja, orang tua, guru, pejabat, profesor, petani dan sebagainya. Sebagian ahli psikologi kognitif mempercayai bahwa lupa terjadi karena interferensi atau terhalang oleh informasi yang lain.

Lupa pada sisi lain merupakan suatu hal yang dapat membantu individu untuk menghilangkan ingatan-ingatan negatif yang menghambat perkembangan dirinya.[2] Lupa terhadap kejadian buruk atau traumatis misalnya, dapat membantu seorang individu berkembang lebih baik. Dengan demikian, lupa tidak hanya dapat diartikan secara negatif saja sebagai bentuk hilangnya ingatan seseorang dalam menemukan kembali memori dalam otaknya, tetapi juga dapat diartikan sebagai sesuatu yang positif sebagai upaya untuk menghilangkan memori tentang peristiwa yang dapat menghambat perkembangan seorang manusia.

Teori-teori tentang Proses Lupa

Informasi yang masuk ke otak manusia dicerna dalam bentuk sandi oleh memori kita. Proses lupa merupakan bentuk terjadinya kegagalan dalam penyandian (failure to encode) mengacu pada kegagalan memasukkan materi atau sandi-sandi ke dalam otak. Kegagalan penyandian tersebut disebabkan oleh faktor adanya informasi yang dipelajari tidak sungguh-sungguh masuk ke dalam memori kita dan disebabkan oleh stress. Ada beberapa teori mengenai proses lupa:

  1. Teori Atropi (Decay)

Decay (pembusukan) adalah memudarnya ingatan akibat jarang dipergunakannya informasi tersebut. Dengan demikian, teori ini berpendapat bahwa lupa terjadi karena informasi yang pernah disimpan tidak pernah dipergunakan atau jarang dipergunakan. Hal ini menyebabkan lama kelamaan informasi tersebut mengalami kerusakan atau membusuk dengan sendirinya.

2. Teori Interferensi

Merupakan ingatan yang terganggu karena masuknya informasi lain. Informasi tersebut menghalangi dan menghambat informasi yang ingin diingat. Gangguan informasi dalam ingatan dibedakan menjadi dua, yakni 1) Retroactive Inhibition, yang berarti ingatan baru menghambat ingatan yang lama. 2) Proactive Inhibition yang berarti memori lama menghambat pengambilan ingatan baru.

3. Cue Dependent Forgetting Theory

Teori ini berpendapat bahwa pada prinsipnya lupa disebabkan oleh kerusakan informasi di dalam ingatan atau terhalang informasi lain. Selain itu, disebabkan pula oleh terlalu jauhnya informasi yang ingin diingat kembali oleh seseorang.[3]
