Presiden adalah kepala negara dan kepala pemerintahan di Angola. Sementara, Presiden menunjuk Perdana Menteri, eksekutif wewenang biasanya dimiliki kepada Presiden.
Posisi Presiden tanggal dari kemerdekaan Angola dari Portugal. Agostinho Neto menjabat ketika Marxis-nya Gerakan Populer untuk Pembebasan Angola (MPLA) memenangkan kontrol negara dari Portugis. Ketika Neto meninggal pada tahun 1979, José Eduardo dos Santos menggantikan dia.
Di bawah kepemimpinan Dos Santos, Angola menjadi demokrasi multi-partai. Pemilu yang terbaru, yang diadakan pada tahun 1992, terpilih kembali Dos Santos dengan 49% suara.
