Platybelodon ("taring senjata datar") adalah genus mamalia herbivor besar yang berkerabat dengan gajah (ordo Proboscidea). Mereka hidup pada masa Miosen, sekitar 15–4 juta tahun lalu, dan hidup di Afrika, Eropa, Asia, dan Amerika Utara. Walaupun mereka bertahan hidup pada masanya, mereka tidak bertahan hidup setelah masa Miosen.

Palaeobiologi

Platybelodon sempat dipercaya bahwa mereka mencari makan dalam daerah berawa di padang sabana yang berumput, menggunakan giginya untuk mencabut tumbuh-tumbuhan air dan tumbuhan semi akuatik. Namun, bentuk giginya justru membuktikan bahwa mereka menggunakan gading bawahnya untuk merobek kulit pohon, dan mungkin menggunakan ujung rahang bawahnya yang berbentuk sekop seperti sabit zaman sekarang, menggenggam dahan pohon dengan belalainya dan menggosoknya dengan gigi bawahnya untuk memotongnya dari pohon.[1] Hewan yang sudah dewasa secara khusus mungkin lebih sering memakan tumbuh-tumbuhan yang lebih kasar ketimbang yang masih muda.[2]

Platybelodon sangat mirip Amebelodon, spesies gomphothere lain. Karena bentuk dari kedua gigi bawahnya, yang dimiliki oleh banyak genera gomphothere (seperti Platybelodon, Archaeobelodon, dan Amebelodon), mereka biasa disebut sebagai "taring sekop."
