"Pest of the West" adalah episode musim kelima dari seri animasi SpongeBob SquarePants. Episode ini pertama kali ditayangkan di Nickelodeon di Amerika Serikat pada 11 April 2008. Episode ini menceritakan SpongeBob membaca cerita leluhurnya yang menyelamatkan Dead Eye Gulch yang sekarang Bikini Bottom.

Episode ini ditulis oleh Luke Brookshier, Tom King, Steven Banks, dan Richard Pursel, dengan Andrew Overtoom dan Tom Yasumi sebagai sutradara animasi. Pada 15 April 2008, DVD episode ini dirilis. Ketika pertama ditayangkan, episode ini ditonton 6,1 juta orang dan mendapat ulasan positif.

Sinopsis

Ketika Patrick berpura-pura menjadi paman terkenalnya Patrick Revere dan Mr. Krabs memberitahu tentang leluhur dan keluarganya yang terkenal, SpongeBob sedih karena dia tidak mempunyai anggota keluarga yang terkenal. Sandy membawanya ke perpustakaan, di sana dia menemukan cerita tentang leluhurnya yang bernama SpongeBuck SquarePants. Diceritakan SpongeBuck sampai di sebuah kota bernama Dead Eye Gulch dan pergi ke Krusty Kantina. SpongeBuck mengatakan dia mencari pekerjaan, William Krabs (leluhur Mr. Krabs) memberikan pekerjaan sheriff, tetapi Dead Eye Plankton (leluhur Plankton pada masa itu) datang dan mengatakan kepada SpongeBuck bahwa dia harus bertarung dengannya pada saat tengah hari (jam 12 siang) dan membuatnya pergi. "Pest of the West" adalah episode spesial yang ditulis oleh Luke Brookshier, Tom King, Steven Banks, dan Richard Pursel, dengan Andrew Overtoom dan Tom Yasumi sebagai sutradara animasi.[1] Brown Johnson, presiden animasi Nickelodeon berkata "SpongeBob secara konsisten menemukan cara-cara baru untuk menyenangkan pendengar kita [...] dan, ini hanya contoh lain bagaimana tim kreatif dapat menempatkan SpongeBob dalam pengaturan apapun dan memberikan momen lucu, klasik yang tak terlupakan."[2] Untuk mempromosikan episode ini, Nickelodeon merilis video pendek di Turbo Nick.[2]

Episode "Pest of the West" adalah episode pertama yang menggunakan Wacom Cintiqs.[3] Pendesain latar belakang Kenny Pittenger mengatakan "satu-satunya perbedaan antara cara menggambar kami sekarang dan dulu adalah kami berhenti menggunakan pensil dan kertas pada musim kelima." Pergantian ke Wacom Cintiqs dilakukan agar animator dan pendesain menggambar di layar komputer dan bisa segera membuat perubahan atau mengembalikan kesalahan.[3]

Penerimaan

"Pest of the West" pertama kali ditayangkan di Nickelodeon di Amerika Serikat pada 11 April 2008.[4] Penayangan pertama ini menandai siaran keempat Nickelodeon pada 2008 yang menjadi jajaran atas televisi kabel berdasarkan total penonton, dan juga menjadi peringkat satu penayangan dan televisi kabel di antara anak-anak berumur 2-11, 6-11 dan remaja berumur 9-14.[5] 6,1 juta penonton menonton spesial berdurasi setengah jam "Pest of the West".[5][6][7][8]

Barang dagang

Pada 15 April 2008, Nickelodeon dan Paramount Home Entertainment merilis DVD episode dengan nama yang sama.[9][10][11][12] DVD ini berisi enam episode lain, termasuk "The Krusty Plate", "Pat No Pay", "The Inmates of Summer", "To Save a Squirrel", "20,000 Patties Under the Sea" dan "The Battle of Bikini Bottom." Fitur bonus adalah animatik awal "Pest of the West" dan empat film pendek "Pest of the West".[2][10][13] Episode ini juga tersedia dalam DVD SpongeBob SquarePants: Season 5, Vol. 2 pada 18 November 2008.[1][14][15] Pada 22 September 2009, "Pest of the West" dirilis dalam DVD SpongeBob SquarePants: The First 100 Episodes.[16][17]

Pada 2013, Nickelodeon merilis buku berdasarkan episode ini yang berjudul Pest of the West. Buku ini diilustrasikan Caleb Meurer, diterbitkan oleh Random House, dan dirilis pada 8 Januari.[18][19][20]
