Pesakitan Asia

Frasa "pesakitan Asia" atau "pesakitan Asia Timur" (Hanzi: 亞洲病夫、東亞病夫; Pinyin: Dōngyà bìngfū) awalnya mengacu pada Tiongkok pada akhir abad ke-19 dan awal abad ke-20 ketika negara tersebut dirongrong oleh konflik dalam negeri dan dimanfaatkan oleh negara-negara besar secara paksa melalui serangkaian Perjanjian Tidak Adil. Situasi ini diakhiri dengan serbuan Jepang ke Tiongkok pada Perang Dunia II. Istilah ini merupakan bentuk lain dari "pesakitan Eropa" yang mengacu pada jatuhnya kejayaan Kesultanan Utsmaniyah pada Perang Dunia I.[1]

Pada Euromoney Philippines Investment Forum 2014, Presiden Benigno Aquino III dari Filipina menyatakan bahwa ia tidak mau negaranya dicap sebagai "pesakitan Asia" yang baru. Pernyataan tersebut merujuk survei Organisasi Perdagangan Luar Negeri Jepang yang menunjukkan bahwa "Filipina merupakan negara ASEAN-5 paling menguntungkan nomor dua setelah Thailand."[2] Persepsi yang dibantah Aquino adalah pertumbuhan tak merata dan kemiskinan massal; pada tahun 2000 sampai 2006, pendapatan nominal Filipina naik 37% dan koefisien Gini-nya turun 5%.[3] Filipina juga dicap sebagai "pesakitan" karena banyaknya skandal korupsi politik di sana, misalnya penipuan Priority Development Assistance Fund.

Pada tahun yang sama, Bloomberg menyebut Thailand sebagai "pesakitan Asia" yang baru karena melambatnya pertumbuhan ekonomi nasional dan kudeta Thailand 2014.[4]
