Penerbit permainan video

Penerbit permainan video adalah perusahaan yang menerbitkan permainan video yang dikembangkan sendiri secara internal atau eksternal oleh pengembang permainan video. Seperti penerbit buku atau DVD, penerbit permainan video juga bertanggung jawab atas pembuatan dan pemasaran produk mereka, termasuk riset pemasaran dan segala jenis iklan.

Karena sering membiayai pengembangan, penerbit juga kadang mencoba mengelola risiko pengembangan dengan manajer proyek untuk memantau, memberi kritik, dan membantu seperlunya. Kebanyakan permainan video dibuat oleh pengembang permainan video eksternal dengan membayar royalti secara berkala. Pembayaran di muka ini diberikan ketika pengembang mencapai tahap tertentu dalam pengembangannya.

Saat ini konsumen membeli permainan yang terkenal namun tidak berkualitas tinggi, dan karena itu penjualan permainan lain dengan genre yang sama menurun. Hal ini membuat anggaran pengembangan permainan terlalu besar, karena setiap penerbit bersaing menjadi nomor satu dalam tiap kategori. Hal ini juga memaksa penerbit untuk fokus pada pada seri waralaba yang sukses daripada membuat game baru, beberapa penerbit seperti Activision Blizzard dan Electronic Arts mendapat banyak kritik karena mengakuisisi studio lain dan menugaskan mereka untuk mendukung waralaba utama.[1][2]

Permainan video menjadi semakin mahal untuk diproduksi. Walaupun konsol generasi saat ini memiliki kemampuan grafis yang lebih maju daripada sebelumnya, tetapi membutuhkan tim yang jauh lebih besar f dapat mengambil keuntungan dari kemampuan tersebut.
