Operasi Sudwind

Operasi Sudwind (translasi: angin selatan) adalah operasi pendahuluan yang dilakukan oleh Jerman sebelum Operasi Frühlingserwachen. Operasi ini terjadi tanggal 17–24 Februari 1945. Operasi ini dilakukan Jerman untuk menghancurkan Landas Serbu Hron yang potensial bagi suatu serangan besar-besaran ke Wina dan Bratislava.

Latar belakang

Pada pertengahan Februari 1945, Tentara Merah berhasil memukul mundur pasukan Jerman kembali ke posisi-posisi yang mereka duduki, dengan pengecualian daerah Szekesfehervar dan menguasai sebuah landas serbu yang cukup besar di seberang sungai Hron di utara Esztergom.Landas serbu ini dianggap Jerman sebagai sebuah titik pengumpulan yang potensial bagi suatu tusukan besar-besaran ke Wina sehingga harus dilenyapkan sebelum mereka dapat melancarkan operasi Fruhlingserwachen (Mekarnya musim semi) untuk mengusir pasukan Soviet.

Hasil Akhir

Selama satu minggu pertempuran memperebutkan landas serbu Hron, Jerman berhasil merebut kembali wilayah seluas 400 kilometer persegi, menimbulkan korban sebanyak 8.000 orang di pihak Soviet, dan menghalau 7 divisi dan sebuah korps mekanis Garda Soviet dari sebelah barat Hron. Kemenangan itu sendiri harus dibayar mahal: Korps Panzer I SS kehilangan 2.989 orang korban, termasuk 413 orang prajurit yang terbunuh. Namun, yang mengejutkan,mereka hanya kehilangan 3 Tank Panzer IV, 6 Tank Panther, dan 2 Tank Tiger.
