Didirikan pada tahun 1899 di kota Chauses yang masuk kedalam wilayah Lyon, departemen Rhone. Olympique Lyonnais saat ini berkedudukan di kota Lyon, Prancis selatan. Olympique Lyonnais merupakan salah satu klub tertua dan tersukses di Prancis.

Kepemilikan dan Keuangan

Olympique Lyonnais dimiliki oleh pengusaha Rhône, Jean-Michel Aulas, yang mengakuisisi klub pada 15 Juni 1987. Selain itu, Aulas juga merupakan pendiri dan chief operating officer dari CEGID (Compagnie Européenne de Gestion par l'Informatique Décentralisée). Pada April 2008, majalah bisnis Forbes menempatkan Lyon sebagai tim sepak bola terkaya ke-13 di dunia. Klub ini dinilai sebesar $408 juta (€275,6 juta), tidak termasuk utang.[5] Pada Februari 2009, Lyon menempati peringkat ke-12 dalam Deloitte Football Money League, dengan pendapatan tahunan sebesar €155,7 juta untuk musim 2007–2008, yang menjadikannya salah satu klub sepak bola terbaik di dunia dalam hal pendapatan.[6]

Pada tahun 2016, sebuah dana ekuitas swasta China mengakuisisi 20% saham Olympique Lyonnais Group dengan harga €100 juta. Dana tersebut dikelola oleh IDG Capital Partners.[7]

Pada Desember 2022, pengusaha Amerika, John Textor, menyelesaikan pembelian klub ini dan memiliki 77,49% saham klub, sehingga menjadi pemilik baru klub. Dalam pengaturan ini, klub mengusulkan agar Aulas tetap menjabat sebagai presiden setidaknya selama tiga musim lagi.[8] Namun, pada 8 Mei 2023, diumumkan bahwa John Textor menggantikan Jean-Michel Aulas sebagai ketua dan CEO OL Groupe, sehingga membuatnya menjadi presiden baru Olympique Lyonnais dan mengakhiri kepemimpinan Aulas selama 36 tahun, di mana lebih dari 50 gelar utama berhasil diraih oleh tim pria dan wanita.[9] Jean-Michel Aulas diangkat sebagai ketua kehormatan, dan L'Equipe melaporkan bahwa Aulas akan menerima kompensasi sebesar €10 juta atas pengunduran dirinya dan tetap memegang 9% saham klub.[10]
