Netbook atau komputer internet merupakan salah satu ragam dari komputer jinjing yang dirancang untuk memenuhi kebutuhan komunikasi nirkabel dan mengakses internet.[1] Dengan rancangan utama yang ditujukan sebagai perangkat dalam merambah web, dan menulis surat elektronik, netbook sangat bergantung pada keberadaan internet untuk akses jarak jauh terhadap aplikasi berdasar web untuk pengguna yang tidak membutuhkan keberadaan komputer berspesifikasi tinggi.[2] Netbook biasanya menggunakan Windows XP ataupun Linux sebagai sistem operasi dasar[3] daripada sistem operasi yang memakan sumber daya komputer yang lebih besar seperti Windows Vista.[4][5] Ukuran perangkat ini berkisar 4,8 inci[6] hingga lebih dari 13 inci,[7] umumnya memiliki berat antara 2 hingga 3 pon (~1 kg) dan biasanya lebih murah daripada laptop biasa yang umumnya berada dalam kisaran harga USS$400,[3] bahkan beberapa di antaranya ditawarkan dengan harga antara US$50 hingga US$100.[8]

Nama

Istilah atau nama netbook sebenarnya merupakan penggabungan dari dua kata dasar: internet dan notebook.

Sejarah

Popularitas pasar Netbook dengan laptop pada pertengahan tahun 2008 oleh PriceGrabber[3]

Asal mula netbook dapat ditelusuri dari produk jajaran netbook milik Psion—perusahaan pembuat perangkat keras yang berasal dari London yang saat ini sudah tidak lagi dilanjutkan, Proyek satu laptop untuk tiap anak (OLPC), dan Palm Foleo. Ketiganya merupakan perangkat komputer yang berukuran kecil, ringan, dan mampu digunakan untuk mengakses jaringan.[9][10][11] Kehadiran netbook mulai dikenal luas pada saat Asus mulai memperkenalkan jajaran produk ASUS Eee PC untuk mengisi kekosongan pasar.[10]

Ukuran

Netbook mempunyai beberapa ukuran dari yang terkecil 7" hingga 11" karena gagdet ini tidak ditujukan untuk bekerja, karena ukuran layarnya yang kecil. Bahkan sekarang ini ada netbook ukuran saku. Umumnya perangkat yang sudah pasti terpasang di netbook adalah bluetooth, WiFi, LAN, USB, dan card reader.
