Mundus (jenderal)

Mundus (bahasa Yunani: Μούνδος, meninggal 536), adalah seorang jenderal Romawi Timur pada masa kekuasaan Kaisar Yustinianus I.

Kehidupan awal

Mundus adalah putra dari Giesmus, raja Gepid, dan keponakan dari raja Gepid lain, Trapstila.[1] Tanggal kelahiran pastinya tidak diketahui. Ayahnya tewas dalam pertempuran melawan Theodoric tahun 488, dan Mundus menerima tawarannya untuk bergabung dengannya. Ia tinggal di Italia hingga wafatnya Theodoric tahun 526.

Bekerja untuk Romawi Timur

Pada tahun 529, Mundus mengirim utusan ke Kaisar Yustinianus I, menawarkan kesetiaannya. Yustinianus setuju, dan Mundus ditunjuk sebagai magister militum per Illyricum, kepala semua angkatan perang di Illyria dan di sepanjang batas sungai Donau.[1][2] Dua tahun sesudahnya, ia mengalahkan serangan orang-orang Slav dan Bulgar.[3]

Mundus sempat menjadi magister militum per Orientem pada tahun 531. Ia menggantikan Belisarius karena kegagalannya dalam Pertempuran Callinicum. Akan tetapi, Mundus tidak pernah pergi ke Timur untuk menjalankan komando itu. Pada Januari 532, ia ditunjuk kembali sebagai komandan tentara Illyria. Pada bulan yang sama, ia sedang berada di Konstantinopel dengan tentara bayaran Heruli ketika kerusuhan Nika meletus. Mundus tetap setia kepada Yustinianus, dan, bersama dengan Belisarius, melancarkan pembantaian terhadap pendukung Hypatius di Hippodrome.[4]

Ia tetap memegang komando tentara Illyria sesudahnya. Pada tahun 535, Yustinianus melancarkan usahanya untuk menaklukan kembali Italia dari Ostrogoth. Mundus memimpin tentaranya ke Dalmatia, sementara Belisarius menyerang Italia dari laut.[5] Ia berhasil mengalahkan Ostrogoth dan merebut Salona;[6] tetapi, pada awal tahun berikutnya, tentara Goth datang dan merebut kembali provinsi tersebut. Dalam pertempuran di dekat Salona, putra Mundus, Mauricius, terperangkap oleh tentara Goth dan terbunuh. Marah akan kematian putranya, Mundus langsung menyerang Ostrogoth, tetapi terluka dalam penyerangan tersebut.[7]
