Mumi (sˁḥ)

Mumi adalah sebuah mayat yang diawetkan, dikarenakan perlindungan dari dekomposisi oleh cara alami atau buatan, sehingga bentuk awalnya tetap terjaga. Ini dapat dicapai dengan menaruh tubuh tersebut di tempat yang sangat kering atau sangat dingin, atau ketiadaan oksigen, atau penggunaan bahan kimiawi.

Mumi paling terkenal adalah mumi yang dibalsam dengan tujuan pengawetan tertentu, terutama dalam Mesir kuno. Orang Mesir percaya bahwa badan adalah tempat Ka seseorang yang sangat penting dalam masa setelah hidup.

Di Tiongkok, telah ditemukan dari peti mati sipres yang tenggelam dengan menggunakan tanaman obat-obatan.

Mumi yang terbentuk karena kejadian alami, seperti di tempat super dingin (Ötzi), asam (manusia Tollund) atau kekeringan yang ditemukan di banyak tempat di dunia. Beberapa mumi yang terawet baik dalam kondisi alami bermulai sejak periode Inca di Peru.

Mumifikasi

Mumifikasi terjadi pada suhu panas dan kering sehingga tubuh akan terdehidrasi dengan cepat. Mumifikasi terjadi pada 12-14 minggu. Jaringan akan berubah menjadi keras, kering, warna coklat gelap, berkeriput dan tidak membusuk.
