Muka air tanah (disebut juga zona permukaan freatik) adalah permukaan imajiner yang menjadi batas antara zona akuifer jenuh air dan tak jenuh air.[1][2] Zona jenuh air merupakan zona dengan pori dan retakan tanah yang terjenuhkan oleh air.[3] Muka air tanah juga dapat dijelaskan secara sederhana sebagai kedalaman tempat tanah terjenuhkan air.
Muka air tanah merupakan permukaan dengan tinggi tekan air air sama dengan tekanan atmosfer (dengan tekanan tolok ukur = 0). Muka air tanah dapat digambarkan sebagai "permukaan" material bawah tanah yang terjenuhkan oleh air tanah di sekitarnya.[4]
