Muggle

Muggle adalah sebutan bagi seseorang yang tidak mempunyai kemampuan sihir dalam buku serial Harry Potter karya J. K. Rowling (dalam hal ini manusia biasa). Istilah ini digunakan pertama kali dalam seri pertama buku Harry Potter yang menceritakan kejadian saat paman Harry (Vernon Dursley) terkejut ketika dipanggil "muggle" oleh seseorang bertubuh kecil yang mengenakan jubah ungu.

Dalam cerita, kaum muggle digambarkan tidak mengetahui (atau tidak peduli akan) keberadaan dunia sihir. Dan, untuk menjaga kerahasiaan, jika ada Muggle melihat hal-hal yang berbau sihir secara tidak sengaja, maka Kementerian Sihir akan mengirim petugas yang disebut Obliviator untuk memodifikasi ingatan mereka dengan Jampi Memori - Obliviate, sehingga mereka melupakan kejadian tersebut.

Namun, beberapa Muggle mengetahui tentang keberadaan dunia sihir, sebagai contoh, Perdana Menteri Muggle Inggris (dan para pendahulunya), orang tua Hermione Granger, keluarga Dursley (satu-satunya kerabat Harry yang masih hidup), dan beberapa pasangan hidup non-sihir dari para penyihir, seperti ibu Dean Thomas, ayah Seamus Finnigan, suami Cho Chang,[1] dan masih banyak lagi.

Asal dan penggunaan

J. K. Rowling berkata bahwa dia menciptakan kata "muggle" dari kata "mug", yang dalam Bahasa Inggris berarti seseorang yang mudah dibodohi.

Kata "muggle" telah ditambahkan ke dalam Kamus Inggris Oxford pada 2003 untuk menyebut seseorang yang tidak menguasai suatu keahlian. Kata tersebut biasa digunakan oleh sekelompok pakar untuk menyebut orang-orang di luar kelompok mereka.
