Michiko Kakutani (lahir 9 Januari 1955) adalah kritikus sastra Amerika Serikat dan mantan kepala kritikus buku The New York Times. Ia dianugerahi Pulitzer Prize for Criticism.

Kehidupan awal

Kakutani, seorang Jepang-Amerika, lahir pada tanggal 9 Januari 1955 di New Haven, Connecticut. Ia merupakan putri semata wayang matematikawan Shizuo Kakutani dan istrinya, Keiko ("Kay") Uchida. Bapaknya lahir di Jepang, sedangkan ibunya adalah warga Jepang-Amerika generasi kedua yang besar di Berkeley, California.[1][2] Michiko mendapat gelar B.A. dari jurusan sastra Inggris Universitas Yale tahun 1976. Salah satu dosen pengajarnya adalah John Hersey.[3]

Karier

Kakutani awalnya bekerja sebagai wartawan The Washington Post, lalu pindah ke Time tahun 1977 sampai 1979. Pada 1979, ia menjadi wartawan di The New York Times.[3]

Kakutani mengumumkan mundur dari jabatan kepala kritikus buku The New York Times pada 27 Juli 2017.[4][5] Dalam artikel yang merangkum kariernya sebagai pengulas buku, seorang penulis Vanity Fair menjulukinya "kritikus buku paling berpengaruh di kalangan penutur bahasa Inggris" dan mengakuinya sebagai tokoh yang mendongkrak karier George Saunders, Mary Karr, David Foster Wallace, Jonathan Franzen, Ian McEwan, Martin Amis, dan Zadie Smith.[4]
