Merger sekolah merupakan proses menyatukan dua atau lebih sekolah guna mencapai pengelolaan yang lebih efektif dan efisien serta meningkatkan kualitas pelayanan pendidikan.[1] Merger/penggabungan merupakan kata lain dari istilah regrouping. Pada awalnya merger merupakan salah satu usaha untuk pengembangan dan pertumbuhan perusahaan. Penggabungan dan Pembagian sumber daya yang dimiliki perusahaan tersebut untuk mencapai tujuan bersama. Sebagai ilustrasi, merger menggabungkan dua badan usaha tetapi badan usaha yang satu tetap ada sedangkan yang satunya lagi bubar secara hukum. Nama perusahaan yang digunakan adalah perusahaan yang eksis/ada. Peleburan aset secara menyeluruh ke dalam badan usaha yang tetap eksis diharuskan dalam proses penggabungan badan usaha ini. Secara kuantitas upaya ini akan memberikan tambahan modal bagi badan usaha yang eksis.
Upaya merger dapat diterapkan juga pada dunia pendidikan. Dalam dunia pendidikan merger lebih berkaitan dengan penyusutan jumlah sekolah. Banyaknya sekolah dengan jumlah siswa yang kurang memadai berdasarkan standar nasional mengakibatkan pemborosan pembiayaan pendidikan. Untuk itu, pemerintah mengupayakan alternatif penyusutan sekolah melalui merger sekolah.[2] Mirip seperti penggabungan dalam badan usaha, penggabungan sekolah melebur aset yang diharapkan dapat mampu memenuhi standar pelayanan minimal bagi sekolah yang bersangkutan.
