Mekanika teknik atau dikenal juga sebagai mekanika rekayasa merupakan bidang ilmu utama untuk perilaku struktur, atau mesin terhadap beban yang bekerja padanya. Perilaku struktur tersebut umumnya adalah lendutan dan gaya-gaya (gaya reaksi dan gaya internal).

Dengan mengetahui gaya-gaya dan lendutan yang terjadi, maka selanjutnya struktur tersebut dapat direncanakan atau diproporsikan dimensinya berdasarkan material yang digunakan sehingga aman dan nyaman (lendutannya tidak berlebihan) dalam menerima beban tersebut.

Pengaplikasian

Mekanika teknik merupakan cabang langsung dari ilmu mekanika pada kajian ilmu fisika, tetapi memasukkan unsur yang lebih mendekati kenyataan dan aspek praktis. Ilmu mekanika teknik dipakai oleh berbagai bidang teknik sipil, teknik mesin, teknik material, teknik penerbangan, teknik elektro, teknik struktur dan teknik kelautan

Teknik sipil dan arsitektur

Mekanika teknik merupakan ilmu dasar bagi teknik sipil dan arsitektur. Pemanfaatan mekanika teknik dalam teknik sipil dan arsitektur khususnya untuk mempelajari struktur bangunan secara mendasar. Secara khusus, mekanika teknik digunakan untuk mengetahui beban yang bekerja pada suatu bangunan berdasarkan kepada perilaku struktur bangunan itu sendiri. Perilaku struktur bangunan dianalisa menggunakan hukum gerak Newton dengan diwakili dalam bentuk gaya reaksi, gaya aksi dan lendutan. Secara lebih khusus, mekanika teknik dalam teknik sipil dan arsitektur memanfaatkan hukum ketiga Newton. Prinsip yang dimanfaatkan adalah keseimbangan pada resultan gaya antara gaya aksi dan gaya reaksi.[1]
