Maurice Denis

Maurice Denis adalah seorang pelukis, pemahat, sekaligus kritikus seni asal Prancis.[1] Dia lahir pada tanggal 25 November tahun 1870 di Granville dan meninggal di Sant-Germain el-Laye saat November 1943.[1] Maurice melanjutkan studi di Académie Julian tahun 1888 di bawah bimbingan Jules Lefebvre dan pernah juga di École des Beaux-Arts.[2]

Dia pernah menjadi pemimpin teoretikus dan juru bicara kelompok pelukis yang tergabung dengan nama Nabis bersama Serusier .[1] Setelah mengunjungi Itali, Maurice menjadi sangat dipengaruhi oleh karya-karya para pelukis Italia abad 14 dan 15.[2] Dia banyak menciptakan lukisan fresko untuk dinding gedung Theathre Champs Elysees, meskipun pada faktanya dia menyukai lukisan-lukisan yang bertemakan religius untuk gereja yang dibuatnya dengan semangat keyakinan seorang kristiani yang taat pada agama.[1] Dia banyak menulis tentang teori seni lukis dalam surat-surat yang ditujukannya pada Gaugin, Van Gogh, serta Cezanne, menggambarkan segerombolan pelukis terkenal yang mengelilingi lukisan Alam Benda Cezanne.[1] Tahun 1919, Maurice bersama dengan Georges Devallières mendirikan Studios of Sacred Art.[2]
