Maurice Rupert Bishop (29 Mei 1944 – 19 Oktober 1983)[1] adalah seorang revolusioner dan politikus Grenada yang meraih kekuasaan dalam sebuah kudeta pada 1979 dari Eric Gairy dan menjabat sebagai Perdana Menteri Pemerintah Revolusioner Rakyat Grenada sampai 1983, saat ia dilengserkan dalam kudeta lainnya oleh Bernard Coard, seorang anggota pemerintahannya sendiri, dan dieksekusi.

Biografi

Kehidupan awal

Bishop lahir di Aruba dari orang tua Grenada, Rupert dan Alimenta Bishop, dan bermigrasi dengan orangtuanya ke Grenada pada 1950, saat ia berusia enam tahun.[1] Ia menjadi murid di Wesley Hall Primary School dan setelah setahun pindah ke St. George’s Roman Catholic Primary School, dimana ia meraih beasiswa dari Roman Catholic Presentation College.[1] Di SMA, ia memenangkan Principal's Gold Medal atas kemampuan seluruh ronde umum dan akademik yang menakjubkan. Meninggalkan sekolah pada 1963, Bishop bekerja sebagai PNS di Pendaftaran Pemerintah, sebelum pergi ke London untuk belajar hukum. Ia masuk Gray's Inn dan meraih gelar hukum dari London School of Economics, University of London.[1][2] Ia memulai studi pasca-kelulusan di King's College London namun hengkang sebelum ujian pada 1969,[3] ia mempraktekan hukum di Inggris selama dua tahun, membantu mendirikan klinik bantuan hukum dan mengembangkan pemahaman dalam kampanye-kampanye menentang diskriminasi rasial, khususnya menentang orang India Barat di Inggris.
