Masao Takenaka

Masao Takenaka adalah seorang teolog sekaligus ekonom di Jepang.[1] Ia juga seorang professor di bidang etika sosial pada Universitas Dishisa di Jepang.[1] Ia pernah menjabat sebagai wakil presiden Federasi Mahasiswa Kristen sedunia.[1]

Pertanyaan teologis penting yang ditekankan oleh Takenaka adalah mengenai arti keselamatan dalam konteks Jepang masa kini.[2] Arti keselamatan dapat ditemukan melalui sejarah Jepang sendiri.[2] Keselamatan Kristen Jepang berakar dari kehadiran para misionaris Protestan tahun 1859 yang membawa pembaharuan dalam bidang pengetahuan, moral dan spiritual.[2] Kekristenan pada masa itu digunakan penguasa untuk kepentingan pribadi atau bersama, khususnya perubahan dari masyarakat feodal tradisional menjadi masyarakat industri modern.[1] Walaupun kekristenan tampaknya menjadi alat politik golongan tertentu, sejarah tersebut dapat menunjukkan bagaimana kesejahteraan manusia diupayakan.[2] Dengan demikian, keselamatan dapat dipahami dalam konteks menyeluruh, dinamis dan konkret.[2]

Menurutnya gereja tidak hanya melakukan tugas dalam masyarakat karena minat mereka terhadap masalah-masalah sosial tetapi dengan pengetahuan bahwa kuasa Allah yang menyelamatkan dari Allah bekerja dalam masalah-masalah sosial yang konkret.[2] Dengan demikian, gereja di Jepang menurutnya harus melakukan tugas mereka dalam masyarakat berdasarkan pemahaman keselamatan supaya mampu mencapai pemulihan kemanusiaan yang baru di dalam Yesus Kristus.[1]
