Mary Somers Heidhues adalah peneliti dan akademisi Jerman yang berfokus meneliti masalah sosial dan sejarah kawasan Asia Tenggara, termasuk Indonesia.[2]

Penelitian di Indonesia

Provinsi Kalimantan Barat, salah satu daerah yang menjadi fokus penelitian Mary Somers Heidhues di Indonesia

Penelitiannya di Indonesia banyak difokuskan kepada masalah sosial dan sejarah etnis Tionghoa Indonesia. Disertasi doktoral Mary Somers Heidhues pada tahun 1965 yang bertemakan kondisi sosial etnis Tionghoa di zaman revolusi ("Peranakan Chinese Politics in Indonesia") dianggap sebagai karya ilmiah berbahasa Inggris pertama dan terlengkap di bidangnya.[2] Ia juga banyak menulis kajian tentang kehidupan etnis Tionghoa di kawasan pedesaan Asia Tenggara.[2]

Mary pernah meneliti masyarakat Tionghoa di Kepulauan Bangka-Belitung dan Kalimantan Barat untuk mendalami sejarah serta kehidupan sosial-ekonomi mereka. Ia tertarik untuk meneliti Tionghoa Bangka-Belitung karena niatnya untuk memperluas pengetahuan tentang Tionghoa-Indonesia di luar Jawa, di mana mereka tinggal di lingkungan masyarakat asli dan sejarah perpindahan mereka yang berbeda.[3] Lewat catatan harian sahabatnya yang bernama Tan Fay Tjhion yang berasal dari Belinyu, Mary dapat menuliskan jurnal tentang kehidupan masyarakat Tionghoa Bangka pada dekade 50-an berjudul "Bangka in the 1950s: Indonesian Authority and Chinese Reality".[3]

Untuk proyek penelitiannya di Kalimantan Barat, ia bekerja sama dengan NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study) terutama bagian ilmu sosial dan kemanusiaan untuk mengerjakan proyek pengumpulan bahan berupa arsip mengenai masyarakat Tionghoa di daerah tersebut.[1]

Pada tahun 2008, Mary Somers Heidhues bersama Leo Suryadinata mendapat Penghargaan Nabil Award 2008 di Jakarta, karena jasanya sebagai peneliti dianggap yang mendorong integrasi bangsa Indonesia.[2]
