Cepphus columba atau mandar-laut dara dalah spesies burung dalam keluarga auk, Alcidae. Salah satu dari tiga spesies dalam genus Cepphus, yang paling dekat hubungannya dengan mandar-laut kacamata. Ada lima subspesies dari mandar-laut dara, semua subspesies, ketika bulu berkembang biak, berwarna coklat tua dengan kemilau warna-warni hitam dan bagian sayap yang khas dipatahkan oleh irisan coklat-hitam. Bulunya yang tidak berkembang biak memiliki bagian atas abu-abu dan hitam berbintik-bintik dan bagian bawah putih. Paruhnya yang panjang berwarna hitam, begitu juga dengan cakarnya. Kaki, telapak kaki, dan bagian dalam mulut berwarna merah. Mandar-laut dara jika dilihat sekilas tampak seperti mandar-laut hitam, yang membedakannya adalah sedikit lebih kecil dan tidak memiliki irisan sayap gelap yang ada di mandar-laut dara. Gabungan, keduanya membentuk superspesies.

Mandar-laut dara adalah auk berukuran sedang, panjangnya 30 hingga 37 cm (12 hingga 15 inci) dan beratnya 450 hingga 550 g (16 hingga 19 oz). Baik jantan maupun betina sama dalam penampilan dan massa, kecuali populasi mandar-laut yang menghuni California di mana betina ditemukan memiliki paruh lebih besar daripada jantan. Bulu musim panas atau berkembang biak dewasa sebagian besar berwarna coklat tua dengan kemilau hitam, dengan tambalan taji sayap putih dan irisan coklat-hitam. Di musim dingin, bulu mereka pasa bagian atas berwarna hitam, sering dengan pinggiran hitam memberikan penampilan bergigi, dan bagian bawah dan pantat berwarna putih. Dahi, mahkota, lores, garis mata, dan penutup telinga berwarna hitam dengan ujung putih, terkadang ujungnya menyempit dan kepala terlihat hitam.[8] Di semua bulu, sayap bawahnya polos dan gelap.[2]
