Macapatan Yogyakarta adalah tradisi melagukan tembang pada masa Jawa Baru . Tradisi ini berlangsung di daerah istimewa Yogyakarta ,pada mulanya macapat hanya untuk keluarga kerajaan saja tetapi kemudian tradisi melagukan tembang ini diikuti oleh abdi dalem keraton sampai akhirnya dikenal masyarakat luas bahkan sempat berdiri sekolah khusus macapat bagi masyarakat pada tahun 1960an.[1]
Pada masa Jawa kuno tradisi macapat dikenal dengan tradisi kakawin dan Kidung .Kakawin adalah tradisi melagukan tembang dengan aturan –aturan yang berasal dari India sedangkan Kidung menggunakan aturan Jawa. Tetapi keduanya baik Kakawin maupun Kidung ,dalam pembacaannya harus memperhatikan cara membaca panjang pendeknya suatu teks seperti dalam cara membaca Al-Qur’an yang dikenal dengan Tajwidj.[1]
Ada tiga aturan baku dalam tradisi macapat yaitu :
1). Guru Gatra, merupakan jumlah baris
2). Guru Wilangan adalah jumlah suku kata dalam tiap baris
3). Guru lagu adalah vokal terakhir dalam tiap baris . bahasa yang digunakan umumnya bahasa “Jawa Baru”[1]
