Léon Foucault

Jean Bernard Léon Foucault (pengucapan bahasa Prancis: [ʒɑ̃ bɛʁnaʁ leɔ̃ fuko]) (18 September 1819 - 11 Februari 1868) merupakan seorang fisikawan berkebangsaan Prancis.

Dia kemudian mendalami ilmu fisika di mana ia memfokuskan perhatiannya pertama kali pada peningkatan proses fotografi “LJM Daguerre”. Selama tiga tahun ia menjadi asisten eksperimental untuk Alfred Donne dalam studi kuliahnya tentang anatomi mikroskopis.

Bersama AHL Fizeau ia melakukan serangkaian investigasi terhadap intensitas cahaya dari sinar matahari, yang dibandingkan dengan karbon pada lampu “Arc” dan “Calcium oxide” dalam nyala pipa oxyhydrogen, terhadap gangguan radiasi inframerah serta sinaran cahaya yang berbeda dalam hal panjang gelombangnya, dan terhadap polarisasi kromatik cahaya.

Léon Foucault meninggal karena kemungkinan adanya komplikasi sclerosis pada 11 Februari 1868 di Paris dan dimakamkan di Cimetière de Montmartre.

Namanya diabadikan sebagai nama Asteroid 5668 Foucault. Selain itu nama dia merupakan salah satu dari 72 nama yang tertulis di atas Menara Eiffel, Paris, Prancis.
