Loksodrom

Sebuah loksodrom digambarkan pada bola dunia.
Loksodrom (merah) dan ortodrom atau lingkaran merah (biru). Walaupun pada peta datar berproyeksi Merkator loksodrom tampak sebagai garis lurus yang terpendek antara dua titik, sesungguhnya pada bumi yang berbentuk bola ortodrom lah yang menunjukkan jalur terpendek.

Loksodrom (bahasa Inggris: rhumb line) adalah jalur antara dua titik di sebuah permukaan bola yang jika ditelusuri arahnya tidak pernah berubah. Pada bola dunia, kendaraan yang mengikuti jalur loksodrom hanya cukup diarahkan pada arah mata angin tertentu dan akan sampai tujuan jika tidak pernah mengubah arahnya. Sifat ini menyebabkan jalur ini menjadi penting dalam navigasi. Dalam peta dengan proyeksi Merkator, loksodrom akan tampak sebagai garis lurus, sehingga pada masa lalu seorang kapten dapat merencakan perjalananya mengikuti loksodrom dengan menggambar garis lurus pada peta. Pada bola dunia, loksodrom sebenarnya tidak berbentuk garis lurus melainkan sebuah spiral.[1]
