Lindung silang

Pada sebuah pedang, sebuah lindung silang atau palang silang ^[1] adalah sebatang logam yang dipasang dengan sudut siku-siku terhadap bilah, ditempatkan di antara bilah dan gagangnya. Lindung silang dikembangkan untuk pedang Eropa sekitar abad ke-10 untuk melindungi tangan pengguna. Bentuk awal lindung silang dijumpai pada varian dari pedang Spatha yang digunakan oleh bangsa Hun, yang disebut pedang Pontic. Lindung silang tidak hanya digunakan untuk menangkis serangan musuh, tetapi juga untuk mendapatkan cengkeraman yang lebih baik pada pedang. Bentuk lindung silang awal berupa batang logam lurus, terkadang meruncing ke arah ujung luarnya. Meskipun pembuatan jenis yang sederhana ini tidak pernah dihentikan, bentuk yang lebih rumit dikembangkan selama Abad Pertengahan.

Belati abad pertengahan pada abad ke-14 dan ke-15 juga mengadopsi varian dengan lindung silang, yang dibuat menyerupai pedang. Belati berlindung silang tetap populer pada abad ke-16, setelah jenis pedang yang menyerupainya tidak digunakan lagi.^[2]
