Les Six Livres de la République

Les Six Livres de la République (secara harfiah berarti "Enam Buku mengenai Republik") adalah sebuah buku mengenai teori politik yang ditulis oleh Jean Bodin, seorang sejarawan, pakar hukum dan filsuf Prancis. Buku ini diterbitkan di Paris pada tahun 1576.

Sejarah

Les Six Livres de la République pada mulanya ditulis dalam bahasa Prancis pada tahun 1576. Semenjak akhir dasawarsa 1570-an, buku ini telah menjadi bahan kajian di universitas-universitas di London dan Cambridge. Untuk universitas-universitas inilah Bodin menerjemahkan langsung karyanya ke dalam bahasa Latin; terjemahan ini kemudian diterbitkan pada tahun 1586.^[1] Dari tahun 1576 hingga 1629, terdapat paling tidak empat belas edisi dalam bahasa Prancis dan sembilan edisi dalam bahasa Latin.^[2] Buku ini telah diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Italia (1588), Spanyol (1590), Jerman (1592 dan 1611), dan Inggris (1606).^[3] Buku ini banyak dibahas oleh para cendekiawan di Prancis, Inggris, dan negara-negara berbahasa Jerman,^[4] dan juga telah mengilhami berbagai pakar hukum yang berkiprah di bidang teori negara, khususnya Grotius, Pufendorf, Hobbes, dan Locke. Buku ini bahkan dapat ditemui di perpustakaan para pemukim pertama di koloni Inggris Baru di Amerika Utara dari tahun 1620.^[5]

Sesuai judulnya, buku ini terdiri dari enam bab.

Kedaulatan

Dalam buku ini, Bodin menjabarkan konsep kedaulatan. Menurutnya, kedaulatan berarti wewenang untuk membuat undang-undang tanpa tunduk kepada wewenang pihak lain.^[6] Konsep ini juga mengimplikasikan kesetaraan, karena seorang raja kecil dianggap sama berdaulatnya dengan raja terbesar di Bumi.^[7] Namun, kedaulatan bukan berarti wewenang tanpa batas; menurut Bodin, kedaulatan para raja tunduk kepada hukum Tuhan dan hukum kodrati.^[8] Selain itu, dalam tatanan internasional, kedaulatan juga dianggap tunduk kepada hukum, karena raja terikat oleh kontrak yang ia buat dengan bawahannya ataupun dengan raja lain.^[9]
