Lembaga Penelitian Padi Internasional (bahasa Inggris: International Rice Research Institute, disingkat IRRI) adalah organisasi penelitian dan pelatihan pertanian internasional dengan kantor pusat di Los Baños, Laguna di Filipina dan kantor di tujuh belas negara dengan ~ 1.300 staf.[5][6] IRRI dikenal karena pekerjaannya dalam mengembangkan varietas padi yang berkontribusi terhadap Revolusi Hijau pada 1960-an yang mencegah kelaparan di Asia.[7]
Lembaga yang didirikan pada tahun 1960 ini bertujuan untuk mengurangi kemiskinan dan kelaparan, meningkatkan kesehatan petani dan konsumen beras, dan memastikan keberlanjutan lingkungan pertanian padi. Ini memajukan misinya melalui penelitian kolaboratif, kemitraan, dan penguatan penelitian pertanian nasional dan sistem penyuluhan dari negara-negara tempat IRRI bekerja.[8]
IRRI adalah salah satu dari 15 pusat penelitian pertanian di dunia yang membentuk Konsorsium Pusat Penelitian Pertanian Internasional CGIAR, sebuah kemitraan global organisasi yang terlibat dalam penelitian tentang ketahanan pangan. Ini juga merupakan pusat penelitian pertanian nirlaba terbesar di Asia.[9]
Dampak
IRRI terkenal karena kontribusinya pada gerakan "Revolusi Hijau" di Asia selama akhir 1960-an dan 1970-an, yang melibatkan pemuliaan varietas padi "semidwarf" yang cenderung tidak miring (jatuh). Varietas semi-kerdil IRRI, termasuk IR8 yang terkenal,[10] menyelamatkan India dari kelaparan pada 1960-an.[11] Varietas yang dikembangkan di IRRI, yang dikenal sebagai varietas IR, diterima dengan baik di banyak negara Asia. Pada tahun 2005, diperkirakan bahwa 60% dari area padi dunia ditanam untuk varietas padi IRRI atau keturunannya.[12]
Sebuah laporan yang diterbitkan oleh Pusat Penelitian Pertanian Internasional Australia pada tahun 2011 menilai dampak pekerjaan pemuliaan IRRI di tiga negara di Asia Tenggara antara tahun 1985 dan 2009. Ditemukan bahwa pekerjaan pemuliaan IRRI memberikan manfaat tahunan US $ 1,46 miliar dan meningkatkan hasil padi hingga 13%.[13]
IRRI, Akademi Ilmu Pengetahuan Pertanian Tiongkok, dan BGI (sebelumnya dikenal sebagai Institut Genomika Beijing) telah "mengidentifikasi susunan genetik yang tepat dari lebih dari 3.000 keluarga beras yang berbeda untuk pertama kalinya dalam apa yang sedang digembar-gemborkan sebagai kemajuan besar dalam beras ilmu."[14]
Selama lima dekade, IRRI telah menyediakan tempat bagi para ilmuwan dan pemimpin masa depan dalam penelitian beras untuk belajar. Sejak 1964, lebih dari 15.000 ilmuwan telah menjalani pelatihan di IRRI untuk melakukan penelitian padi.[15]
Fasilitas
Kantor pusat IRRI di Filipina terletak dalam 252 hektare (620 ekar) kebun percobaan dengan laboratorium dan rumah kaca modern, dan pusat pelatihan. Tanah tersebut dimiliki oleh Universitas Filipina Los Baños dan disewakan kepada IRRI. Kantor ini juga menampung International Rice Genebank dan Museum Riceworld. International Rice Genebank memiliki lebih dari 127.000 aksesi beras dan kerabat liar dan merupakan koleksi keanekaragaman genetik padi terbesar di dunia.[16]
