Latinx

Latinx adalah neologisme yang digunakan untuk merujuk pada orang-orang di Amerika serikat yang berasal dari Amerika Latin. Kata baru ini dipakai sebagai bentuk kata yang netral secara gender. Akhiran -x berfungsi menggantikan akhiran -o pada kata Latino dan akhiran -a pada kata Latina. Latino dan Latina merupakan dua bentuk gender yang umum pada bahasa Spanyol. Latino merujuk pada gender laki-laki, sementara Latina merujuk pada gender perempuan.

Terminologi ini pertama kali beredar di dunia maya sekitar tahun 2004. Kata ini seringkali digunakan di media sosial oleh para aktivis, mahasiswa dan akademisi yang membawa agenda advokasi bagi orang-orang yang memegang identitas gender non-biner. Survey yang dilakukan pada komunitas warga Amerika Serikat yang berasal dari Amerika Latin menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas mereka lebih memilih kata lain seperti Hispanik atau Latina/Latino untuk mendeskripsikan identitas mereka. Hanya 2 sampai 3 percent yang memilih kata Latinx.^[1] Survey yang dilakukan oleh Pew Research Center pada tahun 2020 menunjukkan bahwa 23% dari penduduk Amerika Serikat keturunan Hispanik mengetahui tentang kata Latinx, dan 65% dari mereka mengatakan bahwa kata ini tidak seharusnya digunakan untuk menggambarkan etnik mereka.^[2]
