Landak jawa (Hystrix javanica) adalah jenis hewan pengerat dari suku Hystricidae yang merupakan hewan endemik dari Indonesia. Meskipun tidak terdaftar sebagai hewan yang terancam eksistensinya di alam oleh IUCN, landak jawa diburu orang karena di beberapa tempat merusak tanaman budidaya. Daging landak juga dibuat sate di beberapa tempat.

Landak Jawa banyak ditemukan di hutan, dataran rendah, kaki bukit, dan area pertanian. Pakan landak Jawa dapat berupa rumput, daun, ranting, akar, buah-buahan, sayur-sayuran bahkan landak juga dapat mengunyah tanduk rusa untuk memenuhi kebutuhan mineral dalam tubuhnya. Ciri-ciri fisik yang khas pada landak Jawa adalah tubuhnya yang diselimuti rambut halus (seperti rambut pada mamalia lain), rambut peraba, dan duri. Rambut halus dan duri terdapat di seluruh bagian tubuh landak, kecuali pada bagian hidung, mulut, daun telinga, dan telapak kaki. Fungsi dari rambut halus adalah sebagai pelindung dari cuaca panas maupun dingin, membantu mengatur proses homeostatis tubuh, dan sebagai reseptor sensoris. Rambut peraba berwarna hitam dan putih terdapat di bawah hidung dan di sekitar pipi landak. Rambut peraba merupakan rambut khusus yang tumbuh dari folikel hipodermis. Folikel-folikel tersebut dikelilingi oleh saraf yang responsif terhadap rangsangan mekanik seperti sentuhan atau gerakan.

Pada bagian kepala, tubuh dan ekor ditutupi oleh duri yang tebal dan kaku yang panjangnya dapat mencapai 20 cm. Duri tersebut berwarna kecoklatan atau kehitaman, sering kali terdapat band putih pada duri landak. Setiap duri yang ada pada tubuh landak tertanam di dalam kulit. Duri melekat pada otot yang berfungsi sebagai penarik duri tersebut ke atas (penegang) ketika ada ancaman yang mendekat.

Duri-duri pertahanan landak akan ditegangkan ketika landak merasa terancam oleh predator. Landak mampu menghempaskan duri-duri pertahanannya ke tubuh predator ketika predator mendekati landak. Duri-duri pertahanan tersebut dapat terlepas dan menancap pada tubuh predator. Duri-duri yang hilang tersebut akan diganti dengan duri-duri yang baru. Duri-duri baru ini akan tetap berada atau tertanam di dalam kulit sampai tumbuh sempurna. Pertumbuhan duri baru akan sama dengan proses pertumbuhan rambut pada umumnya.
