Kupe

Ukiran rumah yang menggambarkan Kupe (sedang memegang dayung) dengan dua makhluk laut di bawah kakinya.

Kupe adalah tokoh legendaris dalam mitologi Maori dan juga sejarah lisan beberapa iwi (suku) Maori. Mitologi dan sejarah lisan ini menceritakan Kupe sebagai tokoh yang memimpin sukunya menemukan Aotearoa (Selandia Baru) sekitar tahun 1000 M, tetapi rincian kisahnya berbeda-beda tergantung pada sukunya.

Menurut salah satu versi, Kupe adalah kepala suku Hawaiki yang tiba di Aotearoa pada tahun 925 M. Saat kepala suku Hoturapa sedang memancing ikan bersama dengan istrinya yang bernama Kuramarotini, Hoturapa diperdaya oleh Kupe sehingga ia melompat dari kapalnya. Kupe lalu membiarkan Hoturapa tenggelam, menculik Kuramarotini, dan melarikan diri dengan menggunakan kano Matawhourua yang dimiliki oleh Kuramarotini. Selama perjalanan mereka, Kupe berhadapan dengan berbagai monster laut, termasuk gurita raksasa yang bernama Te Wheke-a-Muturangi, dan akhirnya ia menemukan Selandia Baru. Sekembalinya di Hawaiki, Kupe memberitahukan kepada rekan-rekannya mengenai keberadaan tanah baru dan mengajak mereka pindah ke sana.
