Santo Kristoforus dikenal dan dihormati oleh beberapa denominasi Kekristenan sebagai penginjil dan martir.[1][2] Sebuah cerita kuno yang berkembang sekitar abad pertengahan tentang Kristoforus adalah ia adalah seorang asal Kanaan, perawakannya besar dan tinggi.[1] Cita-citanya yaitu hanya mau melayani orang yang paling kuat dan berkuasa di dunia ini.[1] Dalam suatu perjalanan hidupnya, ia menemukan bahwa yang paling berkuasa di dunia ini adalah Tuhan.[1] Semenjak saat itu, Kristoforus memutuskan untuk menjadi abdi dan pelayan Tuhan.[1] Ia bertobat dan kemudian pergi ke Lycia.[1] Di sanalah ia memberitakan Injil dan mengajak banyak orang menjadi Kristen sebelum kematiannya.[1] Kristoforus mati sebagai martir di Lycia, Asia Kecil pada masa pemerintahan kaisar Decius.[1]

Santo Kristoforus dikenal sebagai pelindung para peziarah, terutama para pengendara motor.[1]
