Kepausan Perugia

Makam Paus Benediktus XI di Perugia

Perugia adalah kediaman lama kepausan selama abad ke-13. Lima paus terpilih di sini: Paus Honorius III (1216–1227), Paus Klemens IV (1265–1268), Paus Honorius IV (1285–1287), Paus Selestinus V (1294), dan Paus Klemens V (1305–1314).[1] Pemilihan ini berlangsung di Palazzo delle Canoniche yang bersebelahan dengan Katedral Perugia .

Katedral ini berisi makam Paus Innosensius III (1198–1216), Paus Urbanus IV (1261–1264), dan Paus Martinus IV (1281–1285).[1] Ini dihancurkan oleh Gérard du Puy, kardinal-keponakan dari Paus Gregorius XI (1370–1378 ).[2]

Selama masa jabatan du Puy sebagai gubernur kepausan selama Perang Delapan Orang Suci dia menjarah lokasi konstruksi Duomo untuk bahan benteng pribadinya.[3] Menurut Heywood, karena konstruksi du Puy, "tampaknya begitu yakin bahwa Kuria Kepausan akan dipindahkan ke Perugia sehingga pedagang asing mulai bernegosiasi untuk menyewa toko dan gudang di kota ."[3] Makam Paus Benediktus XI (1303–1304) adalah masih ada di S. Domeniko.
