Kepala suku

Kepala suku adalah individu yang memiliki peranan sebagai pemimpin dalam suatu suku.

Cara pengangkatan

Ada beberapa metode dalam hal pengangkatan seorang kepala suku, di antaranya dengan cara:

  • diwariskan
  • dipilih demokratis oleh seluruh anggota suku atau oleh para tua-tua adat suku tersebut[1]
  • melalui suatu perlombaan atau sayembara

Seorang kepala suku baru yang terpilih biasanya dilantik oleh seorang kepala adat dalam sebuah upacara.[1] Jabatan seorang kepala suku biasanya adalah seumur hidup atau selama kepala suku tersebut mampu menjabat.[2]

Tugas

Seorang kepala suku memiliki kekuasaan yang lebih independen daripada kepala kampung atau desa. Bahkan di masa silam, kepala suku mirip seperti "raja kecil" dalam suatu sistem pemerintahan yang tertutup. Ia bertindak sebagai pemimpin politik, adat, sosial, dan budaya,[1] serta menjalin hubungan dengan desa sekitar.[2]

Tugas penting seorang kepala suku adalah memimpin Perang Suku, dan menjaga sumber makanan supaya masyarakat suku bisa bebas dari kelaparan.[2]

Kepala suku ternama

Dalam masyarakat Suku Indian Amerika Serikat contoh kepala suku yang terkenal adalah Tecumseh dan Geronimo.[3] Di Malaysia, kepala suku terkenal adalah Rentap dari Suku Iban yang menentang James Brooke di Sarawak.[butuh rujukan]

Sedangkan dalam kisah fiksi, misalnya Winnetou,[4][5] kepala suku Apache, dalam buku karangan Karl May.
