Metamorphoses karya Apuleius adalah satu-satunya novel Romawi kuno dalam bahasa Latin yang masih ada dalam keadaan utuh.^[1] Novel ini diberi sebutan Keledai Emas (Asinus aureus) oleh Santo Agustinus.^[2]

Protagonis novel tersebut bernama Lucius.^[3] Pada akhir novel, tersibak bahwa ia berasal dari Madaurus,^[4] tempat asal Apuleius.
