Pada 19 Mei 2024, sebuah helikopter yang mengangkut sembilan orang jatuh di Provinsi Azerbaijan Timur, bagian barat laut Iran. Sembilan orang tersebut meliputi Presiden Iran Ebrahim Raisi, Menteri Luar Negeri Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Gubernur Azerbaijan Timur Malek Rahmati, imam salat Jumat Tabriz Imam Mohammad Ali Alehashem, seorang pilot, kopilot, kepala kru, kepala keamanan dan pengawal lainnya.[4][5]

Presiden Iran Ebrahim Raisi dan Menteri Luar Negeri Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, dan beberapa pejabat yang berada di dalam helikopter telah terkonfirmasi tewas dalam kecelakaan tersebut.

Pemimpin Tertinggi Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, telah mengukuhkan Wakil Presiden Pertama Mohammad Mokhber sebagai penjabat presiden setelah tewasnya Presiden Ebrahim Raisi.[6] Khamenei juga menyatakan lima hari berkabung nasional. Pemilihan umum untuk memilih presiden baru akan diadakan dalam waktu 50 hari. Para pemimpin dunia dan regional menyampaikan belasungkawa atas kematian Raisi dan Amirabdollahian.[7]
