Kawaca

Kawaca adalah sebuah istilah untuk pakaian perang yang disebutkan dalam naskah-naskah Jawa Kuno.[1]:320 Namanya berasal dari kata bahasa Sanskerta kawaca yang berarti baju pelindung, kuiras, sejenis baju rantai, penutup jenis apapun, korset, jaket.[2]:823

Petrus Josephus Zoetmulder, dalam kamus bahasa Inggris-Jawa kunonya, mengartikan kawaca sebagai baju rantai, mungkin berbentuk seperti jaket, yang jelas berbahan dari logam. Kata itu juga memiliki arti kedua yakni kemeja yang dikenakan oleh para rohaniawan.[2]:823 Irawan Djoko Nugroho berpendapat bahwa dalam konteks militer, kawaca berarti baju besi. Ia berbentuk seperti tabung panjang dan terbuat dari tembaga yang dicetak.[1]:202, 386 Menurut Jiří Jákl, kawaca adalah plastron logam yang dikenakan pada tubuh bagian atas prajurit yang bertatus tinggi.[3]:78 Pada bahasa Bali tinggi, kwaca atau kuwaca menjadi istilah umum untuk jaket, meskipun dulunya bermakna baju zirah pada bahasa Jawa kuno.[4]:216 Dalam bahasa Jawa modern, kawaca berarti kuiras atau zirah rantai.[5]

Pada Kakawin Ramayana (sekitar 870 M), yang merupakan versi Jawa dari epos Ramayana karya Valmiki (sekitar 500 tahun SM), menyebutkan pakaian dan zirah yang mencerminkan zamannya. Seorang anggota keluarga kerajaan disebutkan mengenakan mahkotanya, padaka (kerah, medali, atau pelindung dada), karambalangan (korset atau plastron) dan menggunakan baju besi berlapis emas bahkan dalam pertempuran.[1]:802[6]:27 Kakawin Ramayana menyebut istilah watek makawaca, yang berarti pasukan berbaju pelindung (armoured troops).[3]:77

Sebuah baju zirah, atau lebih tepatnya kuiras,[7]:47 digambarkan pada relief cerita Divyavadana di candi Borobudur. Dalam cerita itu, dikisahkan bahwa Rudrayana mengirim hadiah kepada raja Bimbisara berupa kuirasnya yang terkenal yang tidak hanya memiliki kekuatan ajaib tetapi juga dihiasi dengan permata yang tak ternilai harganya.[8]:282 Kuiras itu digambarkan tanpa lengan dan tampaknya ditutup di depan.[9]:233, plat XXXVII
