Kava atau kava kava adalah tanaman dari Kepulauan Pasifik.[1] Nama kava berasal dari Bahasa Tonga dan Marquesan, yang berarti 'pahit'; nama lain untuk kava termasuk ʻawa (Hawaiʻi), ʻava (Samoa), yaqona (Fiji), sakau (Pohnpei), seka (Kosrae), dan malok atau malogu (bagian dari Vanuatu).[2]

Kava dikonsumsi untuk efek penenang di seluruh budaya Samudra Pasifik Polinesia, termasuk Hawaii, Vanuatu, Melanesia, dan beberapa bagian Mikronesia. Untuk tingkat yang lebih rendah, itu dikonsumsi di negara-negara di mana diekspor sebagai obat herbal.
