Kantor Wilayah DJP Riau dan Kepulauan Riau adalah unit vertikal Direktorat Jenderal Pajak di daerah yang membawai beberapa Kantor Pelayanan Pajak Pratama dan dua buah Kantor Pelayanan Pajak Madya.
Sejalan dan searah dengan reformasi di Direktorat Jenderal Pajak, demikian juga yang terjadi di Kanwil DJP Riau dan Kepulauan Riau. Sesuai dengan Peraturan Menteri Keuangan (PMK) Nomor 131/PMK.01/2006 tentang Organisasi dan Tata Kerja Departemen Keuangan dan PMK Nomor 132/PMK.01/2006 tentang Organisasi dan Tata Kerja Instansi Vertikal Direktorat Jenderal Pajak, maka terbitlah Surat Edaran Direktur Jenderal Pajak Nomor SE-1 /PJ/2007 tentang Petunjuk Pelaksanaan Dalam Rangka Reorganisasi Kantor Pusat dan Instansi Vertikal Direktorat Jenderal Pajak. Semula Kanwil DJP Riau dan Kepulauan Riau bernama Kanwil DJP Sumatra Bagian Tengah yang akhirnya dipecah bersamaan dengan terbentuknya Kanwil DJP Sumatera Barat dan Jambi. Unit operasional meliputi 2 Kantor Pelayanan Pajak Madya dan 12 Kantor Pelayanan Pajak Pratama
Wilayah kerja Kantor Wilayah DJP Riau dan Kepulauan Riau ( Kanwil DJP Riau dan Kepri ) meliputi seluruh wilayah administratif Provinsi Riau dan Kepulauan Riau
