Kampung Bengkurong adalah sebuah desa di Daerah Brunei-Muara, Brunei Darussalam, di pinggiran ibu kota Bandar Seri Begawan. Populasinya adalah 3.583 jiwa pada tahun 2016.^[1] Ini adalah salah satu desa di Mukim Kilanas. Kode posnya adalah BF1920.^[2]^[3]

Etimologi

Nama Sengkurong dan Bengkurong mempunyai beberapa cerita asal-usul yang berbeda, tetapi menurut penutur Dusun, Sengkurong berarti Orang Kurong dan Bengkurong berarti Sungai Kurong. Di masa lalu, wilayah sekitar Sengkurong/Bengkurong mungkin dikenal sebagai Kurong. Kurong juga dapat merujuk kepada suatu kurungan. Sungai yang pernah mengalir melalui daerah itu berkelok-kelok, seperti kebanyakan sungai lainnya. Dahulu, sungai itu berkelok-kelok sedemikian rupa sehingga hampir membentuk sebuah lingkaran di sekitar lokasi tersebut. Menurut legenda, bagian-bagian sungai yang berkelok-kelok ini pernah berpotongan dan membentuk sebuah lingkaran ketika terjadi banjir, tetapi jalur melingkar ini terputus karena aliran sungai yang deras. Secara geografis, lingkaran itu menciptakan sebuah danau tapal kuda yang sepenuhnya terputus dari sungai. Nama kurong, yang berarti terkurung, bertahan meskipun bagian yang terputus itu menghilang seiring berjalannya waktu.^[4]

Administrasi

Kepala desa mengawasi desa itu sendiri, bersama dengan desa Kampung Burong Lepas dan Kampung Sinarubai.^[5]

Infrastruktur

Sekolah Dasar Bengkurong merupakan sekolah dasar desa, sedangkan Sekolah Agama Pengiran Muda Abdul Malik merupakan sekolah desa untuk pendidikan dasar agama Islam di negara ini.

Masjid desa ini adalah Masjid Kampung Bengkurong; diresmikan pada tanggal 26 Februari 1988 dan dapat menampung 800 jamaah.^[6]
