Kaleng makanan aluminium dengan ujung tarik penuh yang mudah dibuka

Kaleng aluminium, adalah wadah sekali pakai untuk kemasan yang terutama terbuat dari aluminium.[1] Biasanya digunakan untuk makanan dan minuman seperti susu dan sup tetapi juga untuk produk seperti minyak, bahan kimia, dan cairan lainnya. Produksi global adalah 180 miliar per tahun[2] dan merupakan penggunaan tunggal aluminium terbesar secara global.[3]

Pemanfaatan

Penggunaan aluminium dalam kaleng dimulai pada tahun 1957.[4][5] Aluminium memiliki plastisitas yang lebih besar sehingga memudahkan dalam pembuatannya; hal ini menghasilkan kaleng dua bagian, yang mana segala sesuatu kecuali bagian atasnya hanya dicap dari satu bagian aluminium dan bukan dibuat dari dua bagian baja.[6] Bagian dalam kaleng dilapisi dengan pernis epoksi atau polimer untuk melindungi aluminium dari korosi saat terkena zat asam seperti minuman berkarbonasi dan untuk memberikan rasa logam pada minuman.[7][8] Epoksi dapat mengandung bisphenol A.[9] Labeldiaplikasikan secara langsung pada bagian samping kaleng atau direkatkan pada bagian luar permukaan melengkung yang menandakan isinya.

Sebagian besar kaleng aluminium terdiri dari dua bagian.[10][11] Bagian bawah dan badan kaleng "ditarik" atau "ditarik dan disetrika" dari pelat datar atau cawan dangkal. Setelah diisi, "ujung" kaleng akan pas dengan bagian atas kaleng. Ini dilengkapi dengan senyawa penyegel untuk memastikan bagian atasnya kedap udara.

Di pabrik minuman, minuman dituangkan ke dalam badan kaleng dan segera ditutup dengan tutup paduan aluminium menggunakan mesin yang disebut mesin penggulung dan disegel dengan penggulungan ganda.[12][13]

Keunggulan kaleng aluminium dibandingkan kaleng baja (terbuat dari besi) antara lain:

  • berat badan rendah
  • biaya yang kompetitif
  • penggunaan ujung aluminium yang mudah dibuka: tidak perlu pembuka kaleng
  • penampilan bersih
  • aluminium tidak berkarat
  • mudah berjamur

Ujung aluminium yang mudah dibuka untuk kaleng minuman dikembangkan oleh Alcoa pada tahun 1962 untuk Pittsburgh Brewing Company[14] dan sekarang digunakan di hampir seluruh pasar kaleng bir.
