Kakap domba adalah suatu jenis kakap yang berasal dari wilayah pesisir Atlantik Benua Amerika dari Massachusetts, AS sampai Brasil selatan, termasuk Laut Karibia dan Teluk Meksiko. Ikan ini umum ditemukan di wilayah Karibia, dimana ikan ini menghuni lingkungan terumbu, dimana ikan dewasanya ditemukan di daerah bercadas atau karang, sedangkan ikan muda muncul di habitat berpasir yang banyak ditumbuhi rumput laut. Ikan ini sudah menyebar di perairan Indonesia seperti di perairan Kalimantan Timur[2] dan sudah dibudidayakan di Nusa Tenggara Timur.[3] Ikan ini bisa ditemukan di kedalaman 25–90 meter (82–295 ft), meski pada umumya ikan ini berada di kedalaman 40–70 meter (130–230 ft). Ikan dewasa cenderung hidup sendiri namun kadang terlihat membentuk kawanan kecil. Ikan ini memiliki kulit kemerahan serta punggung bergaris kuning langsat dengan sebuah bintik hitam antara gurat sisi dan sirip punggung dan belang biru di kepalanya. Panjang ikan ini bisa mencapai 94 sentimeter ([convert: unit tak dikenal]), meski kebanyakan ikan ini tidak melebihi 50 sentimeter ([convert: unit tak dikenal]). Ikan terberat yang tercatat adalah 156 kilogram (344 pon). Ikan ini bernilai komersial tinggi dan juga banyak dicari sebagai Ikan pancing. Ikan ini juga kadang dijual sebagai ikan hias.[4] Daging ikan ini berwarna putih, lembut dan berlapis.
