KRI Imam Bonjol adalah korvet Kelas Parchim dibuat untuk Volksmarine / AL Jerman Timur pada tahun 1981. Penamaan menurut Pakta Warsawa adalah Project 133. Kapal ini didesain untuk peperangan anti kapal selam di perairan dangkal/pantai. Enam belas kapal dibuat untuk Volksmarine (1997-1981) dan 12 kapal (versi modifikasi) dibuat untuk AL Soviet pada 1985-1990 oleh Peenewerft, Wolgast.

Sebelumnya kapal ini bernama GDR Teterow dengan nomor lambung 234 yang dipasang lunas pada tanggal 1 Juli 1981, dan mulai bertugas di Volksmarine pada tanggal 27 Januari 1984. Setelah bubarnya Jerman Timur, maka kapal ini menjadi bagian dari 16 kapal yang dijual ke Indonesia pada tahun 1994. Setelah mengalami perubahan besar-besaran, maka kapal tersebut diterima oleh TNI Angkatan Laut pada tahun yang sama.[1]

KRI Imam Bonjol sebelumya menerima laporan dari intai udara maritim mengenai adanya 12 kapal ikan asing yang melakukan aksi pencurian ikan. Setelah dilakukan pengejaran, maka kapal-kapal tersebut melakukan manuver untuk melarikan diri, tetapi berhasil ditangkap satu kapal ikan yang diduga milik Tiongkok. Saat itulah terjadi insiden dengan kapal Pasukan Penjaga Laut dan Pantai milik Tiongkok.[3]

Presiden Joko Widodo melaksanakan rapat terbatas kabinet di atas kapal KRI Imam Bonjol (383).[4]
